"Our Changing Landscape" webpage of the Royal Alberta Museum states that by 1934, the number of grain elevators in Alberta peaked at 1,755.

An inventory and research undertaken by Judy Larmour in 2002 for the Heritage Resource Management Branch, Alberta Community Development , revealed that 244 were extant.   When this was updated in 2005, it was found that of these, only 180 remain.

It should be noted that the method of counting in the inventory followed the parameters used by the Canadian Grain Commission which considers a twin elevator as a separate structure.

The Heritage Resource Management Branch is responsible for the designation/protection of provincial historic resources in the province.   As of November 2005, 12 grain elevators have provincial designation.   Their location and history can be seen by clicking on the blue dots on the Alberta map.
